Parents e-file rejected when they claimed me as a dependent (I filed MFS)
I got married in 2016 and am still in school. I filed my 2017 tax return with my husband, both MFS. He claimed his own exemption, I had 0 exemptions because my parents wanted to claim me as a dependent. We filed back in March and got our refunds with no problems.
However, when my parents e-filed on April 17, the tax software they used rejected their return, with an error stating that I was already claimed as a spouse on another return. Could someone explain to me how this could have happened?
Anyway, my parents decided to file an extension and paper file their return. I'm wondering if they paper file, are they able to still claim me as a dependent?
