Upgrade from Freedom Edition to Self-Employed. Going in circles...

Hello TurboTax Community!

I started my taxes using turbotax's Freedom Edition, and discovered that it would not cover all of my tax situations.  I was prompted to choose a new product, sign in with that, and pick back up where I left off.  I selected the self-employed edition, signed in through that, and was given the same prompt again.  Now, I'm going around in circles.  It seems turbotax will not allow me to make the switch from freedom edition to self-employed.  Please help!

Unfortunately, TurboTaxFreedom is a completely different platform. It is part of the the IRS Free File Alliance Program. You won't be able to pick up where you left off in the Freedom edition. Try this first: In your Freedom account, see if you can save the tax file to your computer. Then in your Self-Employed account, transfer the file from you computer.

Paula, thank you for your response!

I was able to download my tax file, and have it saved on my computer.  However, any attempt to sign back in to turbotax automatically takes me back to the Freedom Edition, despite signing in through the Self-Employed selection.  Any fix for that?

Again, thank you so much for your help!

You have to create a new user id for the self-employed account. If you have not yet paid, create an new account to upload your account. Not certain the remedy for a paid account. You can try support to see what they might be able to do.

Hi, this is kevmw, on my new account.  So now I have created a new account, and I have my 2017 .tax file on my computer... how can I upload that into my new account so I don't have to start over yet again?  I cannot seem to find any option to upload a current year .tax file.

Thanks in advance!

Kevin, I learned that you cannot upload the file if its in the same year. Only works to transfer info from prior year. This is because it is a different platform. The only option when moving from Freedom to TurboTax Self-Employed is to re-enter. Have your Freedom account open on another browser or tab and re-enter in your Self-Employed account side by side, so you don't miss anything.

When you download the .taxfile from the Freedom Editon account you then can then transfer that .taxfile into your desktop version of Turbotax. The CD or Download, you cannot upload the .taxfile into an online account. I know you asked this a while ago, but this may help someone else having this issue.
